Henna Information and After Care

What is Henna?
Henna is the common name of the flowering plant called Lawsonia inermis. The green leaves for the plant are picked, dried, crushed and sifted into a fine powder.

Do you make your own paste?
Yes I do. I use 100% natural henna powder and make my paste using
lemon juice, tea tree oil, and sugar. It is all natural.

How long does it take to do the designs?
The time depends on the size of the design. The large, hand designs take approximately 10-15 min. The bellies take approximately 1-1.5 hours.

How long does the paste stay on your skin for?
The paste should be left on your skin as long as possible. It will begin to dry and flake off. The longer the paste is on your skin the better the colour will be. It usually takes a couple of hours to flake off.You may brush it off with your hand, but do not use water. Please read my "After Care" section to find out how to get the best out of your henna.

How long does the stain last for?
The initial stain will be orange and it will darken over the next 24-48 hours. The stain will last for approximately 1 week. The length of time depends on factors such as the amount of washing and scrubbing, swimming and whereabouts the design is located.

Get the Best Colour You Can
Follow all or just a few of these steps to get an even deeper, more beautiful stain.
TIME
Leave paste on for a minimum of 6 hours. Overnight makes for the best results.
LEMON SYRUP
Seal the dried paste with a lemon juice and sugar syrup
When the paste is dry dab the syrup onto the dried henna paste design with a cotton ball. As long as the henna paste on your skin remains moist, it will keep staining.
Syrup Recipe: Dissolve 3 tsp of sugar in 3 tbsp of fresh lemon juice. Adjust the quantities to make a thick syrup.
HEAT
Henna needs heat for the colour to be released. Our body heat and environmental heat is sufficient to release the colour, but for deeper results you may like to add more. Hold your hand (with henna paste still on) over the stove. Hovering it around, to get some heat onto the design. A couple of minutes of heat is adequate enough. Repeat the lemon sugar dabbing, then heat again. Heating helps keep the paste moist as your skin sweats.

COVER
Covering your henna allows you to keep the paste on overnight and it adds heat, as well as protecting your sheets and clothes. You can wrap your henna with an old sock, bandage, toilet paper or pillow case. Anything will work.

AVOID WATER
Henna paste should never be washed off with water. It should be lightly brushed off.
After the paste has come away, water and soap should be avoided for the next 24 hours. This is because the henna stain develops gradually and initial washing affects the stain's ability to reach its peak. You may cover the design with olive oil to create a barrier if you are using water in the first 24 hours.
You can just leave the paste on for 4-6 hours and not follow any special steps and still get a good stain.
The above instructions are for a SUPER DUPER dark stain!
